A traffic stop on Interstate 35 led to felony human smuggling charges for a 21-year-old man from Mesquite. The stop was made by Webb County deputies on Sunday afternoon. The man, identified as Alford Cornelius Hughes Jr, initially gave conflicting accounts of his passengers.

He later admitted to driving them to San Antonio. Three undocumented passengers were found in the vehicle and taken into custody by Border Patrol. A loaded gun was also seized from under Hughes' seat.
